Washington, D.C. - The Common Core State Standards Initiative - led by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers - released a draft of standards for what students should learn in K-12 English and mathematics. "It's hugely significant," said Michael Cohen, Achieve's president. "The states recognize they ought to have very consistent expectations for what their students should learn."  Read the article...

The New York Times has also covered this story. "Students are asked to do progressively more challenging things, and although that may sound obvious, it's a real breakthrough," said Mr. Cohen.

Listen to him discuss the significance of this effort on NPR.

The NGA Center and CCSSO encourage those interested in the standards to provide further feedback by Friday, April 2, 2010, at www.corestandards.org.
