Achieve today announced that Elliott Asp, Ph.D., longtime educator and former interim Commissioner of Education for the state of Colorado, has joined its staff as a Senior Fellow. In this role, Asp will work with states to develop, enact, and sustain college- and career-ready policies and initiatives. This includes leading Achieve’s work with states on developing assessment and accountability systems and competency- based pathways (CBP) that support the goal of college-and career-readiness for all students.

"We are delighted that Elliott has joined the Achieve team," said Achieve President Michael Cohen. "He has proven to be a strong leader throughout his distinguished career. We are excited to have his experience and expertise to help guide Achieve's work on college- and career-ready policies."

Asp joined the Colorado Department of Education in November 2012 as special assistant to the then-State Education Commissioner, Robert Hammond.  In this role, he worked on projects related to assessment, accountability, educator effectiveness and the Colorado Growth Model. When Hammond announced his retirement last April, Asp was appointed interim Commissioner.

As an assessment specialist, Asp has held roles including Assistant Superintendent for Performance Improvement for Cherry Creek School District, Assistant Superintendent for Research and Assessment for Douglas County Schools and Director of Assessment for a number of districts in CO. His background also includes being a principal and science educator.
