Researchers at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, are studying why so many college freshmen need remedial English and math classes. One factor is Nevada's current math proficiency exam, which is based on fundamental skills that students are supposed to have acquired by eighth grade. Nevin Brown, senior fellow of postsecondary initiatives for Achieve, notes, "One of the sad things about giving a test like that is that we’re sending deceiving signals to students. We're letting them assume that a passing grade means they're ready for college, which for many of them just isn't true." Read the article...
