The U.S. Department of Education awarded Oklahoma a GEAR UP grant in August 1999. The primary goal of GEAR UP is to ensure all students in Oklahoma are prepared to succeed in postsecondary education. This direct-mail piece was sent to school counselors to remind them to encourage students who achieve designation as a National Merit Scholar, National Merit Finalist or United States Presidential Scholar to apply for Oklahoma’s Academic Scholars Program. It provided a Web address and phone number for counselors to share with students and parents.
