Rhode Island ADP Policy Agenda
Each member of the ADP Network has committed to a common policy agenda, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Highlights of this state's action plan are below. Click here to download a PDF of the complete plan.
Policies and Action Steps
- Align high school standards and assessments with the knowledge and skills required for success after high school.
- In Year 1, define college-ready standards in reading, writing and math with input from diverse stakeholders. Benchmark the standards to ADP and other states' standards.
- In Year 2, convene representatives of business and workforce development programs to align college-ready standards to workforce expectations.
- Require all high school graduates to take challenging courses that actually prepare them for life after high school.
- In Year 1, align and sequence coursework by developing statewide English and math curriculum based on state content and college-ready standards.
- In Year 1, identify policies to support and implement a dual-enrollment program, including interviewing program experts, policymakers, opinion leaders and students. Establish formal high school credit-based transition program with higher education institutions.
- In Year 2 and beyond, implement new high school diploma system, starting with class of 2008.
- Streamline the assessment system so that the tests students take in high school also can serve as readiness tests for college and work.
- In Year 1, implement performance-based assessments that reflect academic and applied learning standards and common core proficiencies.
- In Year 2, align assessments to college-ready standards.
- In 2007–08, administer new high school assessments.
- Hold high schools accountable for graduating students who are ready for college or careers, and hold postsecondary institutions accountable for students' success once enrolled.
- In Year 1, link K–12 and higher education data systems to provide the basis for monitoring progress and evaluating high school reform efforts.
- In Year 2, collect course-taking data to determine impact of coursework on retention and success in college.
- In Year 2 and beyond, link data system to workforce development data sources.
