Achieve's "backmapped" Mathematics Benchmarks, K – 12 originated in February 2002 when Achieve published Foundations for Success (pdf), which defined the math that students need to master by the end of grade 8 to be prepared for challenging courses in high school. The expectations for the middle grades were developed by Achieve's Mathematics Advisory Panel, a diverse group of university mathematicians, mathematics educators, and state and local supervisors of mathematics education. Subsequent to the release of Foundations, Achieve worked to backmap expectations for grades K – 5 to provide a draft set of K – 8 benchmarks. They were further pared in 2007 and became the Elementary Mathematics Benchmarks, Grades K – 6 when Achieve subsequently developed its Secondary Mathematics Benchmarks, Grades 7 – 12.
