Carrie Piper

Senior Adviser, Mathematics

Carrie Piper joined Achieve in March 2012 as a Senior Adviser in Mathematics. Carrie's primary responsibilities are assessment development and design for the PARCC assessments in mathematics. She has over 15 years of experience in the mathematics education and assessment fields. Prior to Achieve, Carrie spent seven years in the assessment industry working for vendors to develop online and paper-pencil assessments for formative and summative assessments in mathematics at the state and district levels.

Most recently, Carrie served as a Mathematics Content Specialist in grades K-12 for Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) where she reviewed mathematics assessment items, including technology-enhanced items, for content validity, bias/sensitivity, and grade-level appropriateness, as well as writing items and item specifications for specific content needs reflected in various state standards and the Common Core Mathematics Standards. During her tenure at NWEA, Carrie developed and presented professional development trainings on item writing, Universal Design, and cognitive complexity.

Prior to NWEA, Carrie served as a Senior Test Development Specialist in mathematics and an Item Development Manager for American Institutes for Research (AIR) where she led test item, test form, and test specification development for grades 3 – 10 for various state assessment contracts. During her tenure at AIR, Carrie facilitated various committee meetings including rangefinding, content item review, client resolution, and data review meetings.

Prior to Carrie’s work in the assessment industry, she was a mathematics department chair and classroom teacher at the middle and high school levels in Maryland, Virginia, and Florida. While teaching in Maryland, Carrie served on the Maryland State Department of Education Committee for the Performance Standards Setting in Mathematics. In Anne Arundel County, Carrie was a model instructor during summer institutes, a School Test Coordinator, and developed and scored district-wide assessments for middle school.

Carrie has earned a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Frostburg State University, a master's degree in Teaching Mathematics from Florida Atlantic University, and a post master’s certificate in School Administration and Supervision from Johns Hopkins University.
