Achieve and Teaching Channel Launch New EQuIP Video

New Video Offers Overview of How Educators Can Strengthen Lessons through the Student Work Protocol

Washington, D.C. – November 14, 2014 - Achieve and Teaching Channel are pleased to announce the launch of the next video in the planned series exploring Achieve’s Evaluating Quality Instructional Products (EQuIP) initiative. This video, which is publicly available for viewing on Teaching Channel’s website, introduces the Student Work Protocol for strengthening Common Core-aligned lessons.

The Student Work Protocol is a process through which educators use student work as an indicator of the quality and alignment of particular tasks and lessons. Designed with the knowledge that teachers regularly analyze student work as part of their daily routines, the protocol facilitates discussion to generate qualitative feedback and suggestions for improvement on particular tasks.

“The Student Work Protocol serves as an important complement to the EQuIP quality review process because it uses actual student work to encourage educators to consider instructional materials from the student perspective,” said Alissa Peltzman, Vice President of State Policy and Implementation Support at Achieve.

“By examining the outcome – how students have actually responded to particular questions and prompts – teachers are able to think back to the targeted standards and purpose of instruction to evaluate the quality of lesson alignment.” “Teaching Channel considers Achieve a valuable partner in offering important collaboration tools to our growing community of more than 620,000 educators,” said Teaching Channel CEO, Pat Wasley.

“This protocol helps teachers link the instructional moves they make directly to student learning. To top it off, this helps them work with colleagues to calibrate their judgment. It’s incredibly useful!” The video outlines the five steps in the Student Work Protocol and shows real teachers engaging in discussion to revise instructional materials collaboratively.   EQuIP was launched by Achieve as a means of identifying high-quality materials aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The objectives of the EQuIP initiative are twofold: (1) to increase the supply of high quality lessons and units aligned to the CCSS that are available to elementary, middle, and high school teachers as soon as possible; and (2) to build the capacity of educators to evaluate and improve the quality of instructional materials for use in their classrooms and schools.

“The Student Work Protocol is a concrete representation of the EQuIP initiative’s commitment to the continuous improvement of Common Core-aligned lessons and units,” Peltzman said. “As with the EQuIP quality review process, educators are encouraged to work together to provide feedback and strengthen instructional materials for the benefit of students.” The full Student Work Protocol video is available here.  Additional videos in the EQuIP series are available here:
