According to an analysis by American Institutes for Research vice president Mark Schneider, more than $9 billion was spent by state and federal governments to support students at four-year colleges and universities who left school before their sophomore year during a five-year period. The cost of educating students who drop out after one year account for between 2% and 8% of states' total higher education appropriations. Download the report here.
